Everyone is entitled to their own opinion…but everyone is also entitled to be wrong.
And unlike Michael Stipe, I don’t feel fine. The end has to be coming soon. Last week I read on Mashable (a great site encompassing all that is social media) that Lady Gaga is the first franchise with a billion web video views. And to make things worse Twilight will be the second to make it into that exclusive club. If that’s not a sign of the end times, I don’t know what is.
Disclosure: I’ve never actually listened to an entire Lady Gaga song. I have watched Chris Daughtry’s cover and the South Park clip. Yes, that is me on the chorus. And I used that pic of Jeremiah’s poker face without permission.
I can sympathize (somewhat) with people who enjoy listening to Lady Gaga. I haven’t always had such a discriminating ear nor a desire to seek out the best music the world has to offer. I’ve added a little montage of the beginning of my 21+ year journey of musical discovery. It is a little embarrassing but I want you to understand where I’m coming from.
- California Raisins – “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” (video)
- Michael Bolton – “How Can We Be Lovers? (video)
- Paula Abdul – “Opposites Attract” (video)
- Janet Jackson – “Rhythm Nation 1814″ (video)
- Mötley Crüe – “Dr. Feelgood” (video)
- Sunny Day Real Estate – “In Circles” (video)
- Live – “Selling The Drama” (video) I actually remember watching this performance on the greatest show MTV ever produced, 120 Minutes.
- Plankeye – “BC” (video)
- Strongarm – “Trials” (video)
- mp3.com (wiki)
I’ve gone from a kid who lip-synced to the California Raisins on the school bus and saved his allowance to buy a Michael Bolton cassette single to one obsessed with learning all the lyrics and using the antenna on a boom box to sing along to all songs on Forever Your Girl by Paula Abdul to learning about new music from watching music videos on MTV to finding out that Christian music doesn’t have to suck to scouring sites like mp3.com (the original version) for new bands to listen to. In all, this coming of age storyline took me through my formative years.
Good music is rarely popular and popular music is rarely meaningful…so enjoy some good, meaningful music while you still can…

I was on Yahoo and found your blog. Read a few of your other posts. Good work. I am looking forward to reading more from you in the future.

Love your montage! For some reason, I don’t remember 120 Minutes – I probably watched it plenty, although I don’t remember that Live performance, either.
MP3.com – hmm, at this point in the history of internet downloads, I was probably using Napster, the Vandy network, or your CD collection to find new music.
Did you edit this? I remember a Venn diagram when I first browsed over the post. Nice, clean redesign on the site, btw. Steady evolution. Archive.org doesn’t have much on you.
thanks, jj.
i heavily edited this post from the original to keep it more focused and i thought it would be more effective by including 2 more videos.
i did use the vandy network briefly while i was there, but i mainly just got music i already owned and didn’t discover anything new.
i was a little disappointed in archive.org lack of my history. the one screenshot i could pull up didn’t even include the css design.
you’re jumping to quite a conclusion, aren’t you?
Why do you have that other player? I can’t control the volume levels.
thanks for the feedback, joe. i agree with you and have changed the default player for videos to a stripped-down version of the native youtube player.
